Janet Sobel
painting

Janet Sobel (1893–1968) was a Ukrainian-born American painter and a pioneer of all-over drip abstraction. Born in Katerynoslav (now Dnipro), she emigrated to the United States in 1908 and began to paint in her forties, entirely self-taught. Championed by Max Ernst and Peggy Guggenheim, she exhibited at Art of This Century in 1945; critic Clement Greenberg credited her work as an early influence on Jackson Pollock and Abstract Expressionism.
